The Marc Basnight Bridge (Bonner Bridge Replacement)

Bonner Bridge: Between Hatteras and Bodie Islands in North Carolina, stretched the 2.7-mile Herbert C. Bonner Bridge. Well past its life span, Bonner Bridge is now superseded by a structure better equipped to withstand the brutal coastal environment and provide more navigational options on the waters beneath it. Employing high-durability concrete and stainless reinforcing steel, the new bridge is expected to last a century. SDI supplied a specially designed high strength bar system to fortify the precast columns and precast roadway segments. In 2019, the American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) awarded the Marc Basnight Bridge a Bridge Award of Excellence in its “Bridge Over Water” category due to its innovation of design to suit the challenging inlet environment, rapid construction, cost competitiveness, and minimized impact on the traveling public during construction.  Marc Basnight Bridge also won second place in Roads & Bridges Top 10 Bridges for 2019.
