Bayonne Bridge Connecting New York and New Jersey

The Bayonne Bridge, a 1930’s steel arch icon that remains one of the largest of its kind on earth, required extensive retrofitting to raise its deck roughly 60 ft. to accommodate larger modern vessels sailing beneath it to port along the strait of Kill Van Kull. The project was technically advanced, requiring a host of specially designed post-tensioning and anchorage systems. In all, SDI supplied over 7 million feet of strand to establish the next generation of safe, functional service from the beautiful Bayonne Bridge.  In 2019, the American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) awarded Bayonne Bridge a Bridge Award of Excellence due to its superior aesthetic harmony with the local environment, rapid construction, cost competitiveness, and minimized impact on the traveling public during construction.
